The
research activities in Plant Pathology
were started in 1920-21 in Section of Plant
Pathologist to Government, U.P. with a
Plant Pathologist and three research assistants
and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
including Ph.D. (by research) of Plant
Pathology under Professor Botany in Botany
department of Government Agricultural College
in 1920 and 1945, respectively with staff of two Assistant Professors (Class II, Gazetted
Officer), one Lecturer and one Demonstrator.
The post-graduate teaching including Ph.D.
by research was started for the first time
in the country in 1945-46. During III Five
year plan in 1961 the Section of Plant
Pathologist was strengthened with creation
of the post of Systematic Mycologist, Plant Pathologist, Bacteriologist and Virologist (UPAS Jr. Scale Sec. C, class
II Gazetted Officers) along with eight
posts of Senior Research Assistant (Subordinate
Agricultural Services-Group I), four posts
of Junior Research Assistant (SAS Gr. II)
and three posts of Subordinate Agricultural
Service Group III, one post of Artist and
one post of Statistical Assistant (each of SAS Gr. I) and with the appointment of Professor (Plant Pathology
Plant Pathology section of the Botany department
was elevated to a status of a separate
Department of Plant Pathology. ††††††† In
1969 the newly created Department of
Plant Pathology of Government Agricultural
College and the Section of Plant Pathologist
to Govt. U.P. were integrated under Professor & Head, Department of Plant Pathology in newly upgraded U.P. Institute of Agricultural
Sciences with the creation of two posts
of Class I (UPAS Sr. scale– Gazetted Officer) as Plant Bacteriologist and Plant Virologist, three posts
of Class II (UPAS Jr. Scale, Gazetted
Officer) as Assistant Plant Pathologist
(Seed Pathologist), Assistant Plant Pathologist
(Nematology) and Extension Pathologist
during IV Five year plan. Later on, in
1975, U.P. Institute of Agricultural
Sciences was further elevated to the status of the present Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology and the Department of Plant Pathology became a constituent of College
of Agriculture of the University.
The
first Plant Pathologist in the Section
of Plant Pathologist to Government Uttar
Pradesh was Dr. P. K. Dey (1920 -1945)
and subsequent Plant Pathologists were
Dr. U. B. Singh (1946-1949), Dr. A. K.
Mitra (March 1949-October 1949), Dr.
P. R. Mehta (1949-1952), Dr. Babu Singh
(1952-1953), Dr. R. S. Mathur (1953-1966;
1968-March 1969) and Dr. I. N. Tandon (1966-1968). Since the creation of separate
department, the Professor & Heads were Dr. H. K. Saksena (July, 1961- Dec. 20, 1982), Dr. I. N. Tandon (Dec.
21, 1982-June 30, 1985), Dr. Jagdish
Swarup (July 1, 1985- Sept. 12, 1996),
Dr. D.V. Singh (Sept 13, 1996- Sept 9,
1999), Dr. R.P. Dwivedi (Sept 10, 1999-July
14,2000), Dr. H. P. Shukla (July 15,
2000-July 17, 2003) and Dr. Kumud Kumar
(July 18, 2003- continuing).
