The
section of EBR was established in 1904 and
is one of the first EB of the country along
with EB Lyallpur, which has gone to Pakistan.
During Rabi 1997-98, The University has made
tremendous progress in variety development
for various growing situations of the state
and made landmark by releasing quality wheat
varieties like Deva (K 9107), Ujiyar (9006),
Gangotri (K 9162) and Halna (K 7903), not only
in the country but also in other parts of the
World. In addition, two dwarf verities K 816
and multiple varieties KML 7406 effective against
rust were developed during 1971-72 and 1978-80.
A distinguished variety Achuta (named after the famous first wheat coordinator of Nepal), is high yielding, multiple
resistant (all types of rusts, Karnal bunt,
foliar blights and smuts) is a contribution
of this section. The ICAR has published a special
bulletin highlighting the five wheat varieties
of this section like K88, Ujiyar (K9006), Indra
(K 8962), Deva (K 9107) and Maghar. Similarly
recent introduction is Atal (9644), Deva (K9107)
has the distinction of having the highest protein
content (13-14%),which is 2% higher than any
other variety released so far in the country.

Another
significant contribution of this section is the Halna
(K 7903) Variety, which is a short duration variety
(70-90) days and has been recommended for taking as
a late variety in mid January. Similarly, two released
and notified varieties namely Indra (K8962) and Gomti
(K9465) are doing excellent from October end to middle
December under rainfed condition in diara situation.

of the varieties developed by this section have the
yield potential of 60-70 q/ha. and can be compared Triveni (K8020) has been recommended for late
sown condition during 15% higher than Kalyansona.

Kanpur
is one of the oldest centers in the country for
barley crop. This center ha developed 21 varieties
for different agro climatic zones i.e. for saline-alkaline,
malt and breweries (K-551 and K-508), huskless
(Geetanjali and K-1155), feed and folder purpose
and diara land conditions 9K-560, Lakhan, K-141
and Geetajali ). Geetajali variety gives the
highest malt yield and enjoys the top position
in India. It gives 90% of the malt and 8% protein. Azad (K- 125) is suitable for saline-alkaline soils of UP,
Bihar and West Bengal. This variety is being
used as a national check in all India Coordinated
trials. Manjula (K-329) a tall and early maturing
variety was introduced in 1988 in late sown condition
for UP and NEPZ (North Eastern Plain Zone ).
Recently the State Variety Release Committee
released barley variety Priti (K-409) in 1997
for cultivation under limited irrigated condition, K-508 (6- rowed) in 1996 and
Ritambhra (K-551) a 6-rowed variety in 1997 for
malt and brewing purpose, Haritma (K-560) a lodging
and rust resistant variety in 1997 for NEPZ under
rainfed condition.

This
section is running state-financed scheme “Dal Yojna “. This is the oldest and premier pulse improvement center in the country. There
are two Professors, 16 Associate Professor,
one Assistant Professor and 8 Research Assistents
are working in the section . Outstanding varieties
like T21, T 7 and T 17 of Arhar; to of Mung;
T 3, Radhey and K850 of Chickpea; T 163 of
Pea and T 36 and Mallika of Lentil were developed by this University . Besides, Avarodhi and KWR 108 (rust resistant),
KGD 1168 (wilt resistant) of chickpea; Rachna,
Shikha, Swati and Sapna (powdery mildew resistant
) of pea; Amar (erect) and Azad (sterility
mosaic resistant ) of arhar; Shikar, Azad Urd-1
(yellow mosaic resistant ) of urd are some
of the resistant varieties have been developed by the University . Urd area in UP area in UP is about 70,000 ha. and now growing
to Rabi and even after potato. Indents for
breeder seeds for Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, New Delhi and all the states in the country. About 35 per cent
more seed is produced than indents Surplus
being used for frontline and to the farmers.

The
All India Coordinated Project on Oilseeds-Rapeseed
and Mustard was sanctioned to do multidisciplinary
research for developing early maturing
, high yielding varieties with high oil
content and resistance / tolerance against
pest and diseases besides, standardization
and production and protection technologies for this important region. The section is having technical staff
strength of nine scientists with seven
supporting staff. The section is credited
with many achievements by releasing a
large number of acceptable varieties
specific to this region. Some of then
are Mustard varieties T- 59 (Varuna) for entire country (Released by CVRC) in 1975, Rohini, a zonal check variety
(Zone III) for whole UP in 1985, Vardan,
a national check variety in late sown
for UP and MP in 1985, Vaibhav, in rainfed
condition for UP and MP in 1985 and Urvashi
for whole UP in 19999 and toria variety
Bhawani (a zonal check variety) in 1986 for UP and HP.
