The
State Government established the
research unit in the year 1951 at
Alambagh, Lucknow for conducting
the research work of vegetable crops.
During 1954 it was shifted from Lucknow
to Kalyanpur Kanpur. In 1962 the
vegetable research programme was
strengthened with the creation of
post of EB (vegetables). During 1971-72 a scheme under AICVIP on vegetable crops was launched
by the ICAR for the improvement of
vegetable crops at the centre. During
1981-82 Government of India sanctioned
an project on “Breeder Seed Production of Vegetable Crop” to this center. Twenty-six varieties of 14 different vegetable were developed
by the centre. Besides, this center
has also significance at national
level by developing 11 varieties
namely Type-1, KS 17, Azad T-2 of
Tomato; Azad Kranti Type-3, AB-1,
AB-2 and AB-3 of Brinjal ; Azad P-2
and Azad P-4 of table pea and Azad Nutan of Bottlegourd, which have been identified by the
AICVIP under the dynamic leadership
of Dr. J.P. Srivastava, EB(Vegetables).
All the above varieties have been
noticed and the breeder seed is being
produced to supply to different agencies
for seed multiplication.

Some
of the verities like Type-3 in Brinjal
and Type-1 in Tomato were used as national
check for several years, while two varieties
viz. KS 224 and KS 331 of Brinjal are being
used as check for coordinated programme.
The variety Azad P-1 of Table pea was completely
replaced Bonneville, the national variety.
This variety has very good adaptability
all over the country. The varieties like Chanchal in chilli are perennial and K-Barahmasi in Bittergourd
produced fruits year round. This center
is very active in the improvement programme
of vegetable crops, as 13 improved lines
have been included in coordinated trails
at national level. The Centre has also
a rich gene bank in different vegetable
crops.
|
| |
The
vegetable center developed hybrids in different
vegetable crops like brinjal, tomato, okra,
bottlegourd and bitter gourd etc. At percent
5 hybrids namely KBHL-1 and KBHR-2 in Brinjal;
KOH-1 in Okra; KBGHL-1 in Bottlegourd and
KTH in Tomato have been included in AICVIP
trails. In Brinjal developed by the University
was cited in the SAARC Bulletin “Hybrid and High Yielding Crop Varieties in SAARC Countries” published by SAARC Agricultural Information Centre, New Delhi. The Centre is
producing more than 100 quintal of breeder
seeds annually and supplying the seed as
per indent of Government of India and Department
of Horticulture, UP. This Centre fulfills
more than 60 percent demand of breeder
seed of the department annually.

In
addition to the prescribed mandate of this
Centre, the scientists of this section
are also imparting teaching and doing Extension
work as and when required by the University.
The Centre has adopted a Village Kundanpur
near Kanpur City by giving food quality
seed of vegetable crops as well as production
technology. Besides, the mandate of vegetable
programme, the center has remarkable achievement in seed spices by developing three varieties namely
Azad Dhania-1 in coriander; Azad Saunf-1
in fennel and Azad Kalaunji-1in Nigellia
with many recommendations of production
technology. The centre has one ad-hoc research
project “Development of Hybrid in Vegetable Crops” under NATP.
