About the department/Section

  • Department was initiated with the creation of graduate courses in agriculture during 1930.
  • Post graduate program in Agronomy was taken up during 1951. Subsequently the original name of agriculture section was changed to Agronomy subject.
  • College was upgraded in 1969 as U.P. Institute of Agriculture Science with the creation of 10 full fledge divisions including Agronomy and Agriculture Engineering.
  • The division of Agronomy and Agriculture Engineering was renamed as Department of Agronomy and Agriculture Engineering as on July 01, 1975 with the up gradation of the Institute in to Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agril. & Technology.
  • The department of Agronomy and Agriculture Engineering was divided in to two separate departments in 1979 namely Department of Agronomy and Department of Agricultural Engineering.

Mandate :

  • To impart teaching to under-graduate and postgraduate students in the discipline of Agronomy.
  • Providing practical training to under graduate students under practical crop production (PCP) programme on the principle of “earn while learn”.
  • To develop a transformative educational experience for students focused on deep disciplinary knowledge; problem solving; leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; and personal health and well-being.
  • Guiding M.Sc. (Ag.) and Ph.D. students for their thesis.
  • Planning and execution of research works on profitability and sustainability of cropping /farming systems, organic farming, irrigation scheduling in field crops, crop-wise and cropping system based weed management practices and other need based research on other relevant aspects of agronomy through plan, non plan and ad-hoc projects.
  • To develop low-cost and no cost improved agro-techniques to increase input use efficiency and income in general and for small and marginal farmers in particular.
  • To develop the integrated farming system modules, climate smart agro-techniques, integrated nutrient management modules and resources conservation technologies under changing climatic scenario of the area jurisdiction of the university.
  • Provide agro-advisory services to the farmers’ based on medium range weather forecast.
  • To develop crop forecast model at different phase of the different crop for planners to estimate the yield during Kharif and Rabi season.

Major research achievements

Generated Technology

  • Application of RDF 100% + vermi-compost @ 3.0 t/ha + ZnSo4 25 kg/ha+ azotobactor 20g/kg seed in mustard could bring significant increase in the grain yield (28.57) of mustard.
  • Hyb. Rice-wheat- greengram (G+R) for rice based cropping system and Maize+black gram-potato-onion for maize based cropping system could be suitable crop sequence under central plain zone of Uttar Pradesh
  • Late sown chickpea could yield maximum if fed @ 100% RDF with Rhizobium + PSB + PGPR (B3) in central zone of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Wheat crop could yield significantly maximum with the management of weeds through post emergence tank mixed application of sulfosulfuron and met sulfuron (25+4 g/ha) at 25-30 DAS. The magnitude of increase in grain yield was 27.8% over weed check .
  • Under the land configuration and weed management practices in onion, raised bed pattern with 10 tonnes/ha rice straw along with application of Oxyfluorfen @ 225 g a.i./ha + one hand weeding at 40 DAT in onion effectively controlled weed all kind of weed with minimum nutrient depletion and produced highest bulb yield (211.05 q/ha), net return (Rs 197963/ha) and BC ratio (1:3.65). This treatment combination may be recommended for higher productivity and probability of Rabi onion in control Uttar Pradesh.
  • 75% RDF along with seed inoculation with Rhizobium and PSB was observed an alternative of 100% RDF for the cultivation of chickpea in Central Plain Zone of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Clodinofop @ 60 g ha-1 + metsulfuron methyl @ 4 g ha-1 was observed an alternative of hand weeding twice at 20 and 45 DAS for effective weed management of irrigated linseed in Central Plain Zone of Uttar Pradesh.

Technologies included in Saghan Padhatiyan published by state Government

  • Spray Imazathapyre 10 EC @750-1000ml (75-100 gram a.i.) per hectare in standing crop of zaid moong at 20-25 DAS to manage weeds (Zaid Phaslon Ki Saghan Padhatiyan, 2018).
  • Four cropping systems viz, Hybrid paddy-wheat, Hybrid paddy-wheat –Moong, Maize-Garlic-Moong and Maize-Potato-Onion cropping systems for central plain zone of UP.(Karif Phaslon Ki Saghan Padhatiyan).

 

Project wise brief Achievements

AICRP- IFS

Experiment no. 1 (A):

  • Hy. Rice-Wheat cropping system has proved its excellence over Hy. Maize-Wheat cropping System in respect of NMR.
  • Maize (cob) – Potato + Mustard – Okra crop sequence (T9) excelled all the cropping systems in respect of total biological yield (256.04 q/ha REY), Net monetary return (Rs 3, 63, 556 Rs./ha) and B:C ratio (3.96).
  • Hy. Maize + Black gram – Chickpea + Linseed – Green Gram (G+R) (T4) with 165.89 q/ha REY and Rs 2, 28, 889 Rs/ha NMR.
  • Maize + Cowpea – Oat – Sweet Sorghum (T8) cropping system evaluated keeping in view the requirements of green fodder round the year gave lowest REY (59.55 q/ha), NMR (Rs 40299 Rs/ha) and B:C ratio 1.55.

IFS Model:

    • Three component i.e. crop production dairy and horticulture are running in one ha land allotted for IFS model. Total net income of Rs. 1, 84, 505.00 was recorded from on station model. During the year net income of Rs. 45,015.00 from crop production unit, Rs. 1, 36, 366.00 from Dairy Unit and Rs. 3,124.00 from Horticulture unit.
    • In IFS model total 9267.6 kg CO2-e GHG emission was recorded as a source and total 37309.8 kg CO2-e GHG as Sinked, Thus -28042.2 kg CO2-e GHG was neutralized in the atmosphere.

OFR-1 Experiment:

  • Grain yield of Rice (6755 kg/ha) and Wheat (4763 kg/ha) were recorded the highest under T6 (NPK + Zn) followed by T5 (Recommended dose of NPK).
  • Net return Rs 139119/ha was recorded maximum with T6 followed by Rs. 127576/ha under T5 .
  • The increase in the grain yield of Rice and wheat were observed 34.61% and 29.88% higher over farmers practices.
  • The increase in the NET RETURN of the system was observed 58.70% higher over farmers practices.
  • T6 also enriched the soil as compare to other treatments.

OFR-2 Experiment:

    • Two existing farming system prevailed in 24 household, the highest net Income (Rs. 113290.00) was registered under Crop + Dairy + Horticulture farming system occupied 0.6 ha average land holding followed by crop + Dairy (Rs.102413.00) practiced having 0.8 ha Av. holding.
    • After Diversification and interventions in existing farming system during Second year the annual household income was increased 57.66% to 63.43% over bench Mark.

OFR-3 Experiment:

  • Six crop + dairy and six crop + dairy + horticulture farming system’s farmers, each two from six villages were selected.
  • After Constraints analysis, interventions in crop production, Livestock were made
  • The average household income of Rs. 163759.00 was recorded in second year with average land holding of 1.32 ha in crop + dairy system which was found 55% higher than benchmark income Rs 105925.00
  • Average household income of Rs. 153754.00 was recorded in second year with average land holding of 0.92 ha in crop + dairy + horticulture system which was found 63% higher than benchmark income Rs. 94229.00

On Farm Research, Tharion, Fatehpur

OFR 1: Response of nutrients in predominant Rice-Wheat Cropping system on farmers’ fields.

  • The highest yield of Paddy (6755 kg/hal and Wheat (4763 kg/hal as well as Net return (Rs 139119/ha) were recorded under Te (NPK + Zn) followed by 6253 kg/ha Paddy, 4542 kg/ha Wheat and Rs. 127576/ha NMR under T 5 (NPK) treatment. The highest B: C ratio (2.90) was also obtained under Ts (NPK + Zn) followed by B: C ratio (2.78) with the application of Recommended NPK fertilization (T 5).
  • The highest nutrient concentration and uptake in grain and straw of rice and wheat were recorded under the treatment NPK + Zn (Te).
  • More than Sufficient nutrients concentration under the treatment NPK & Zn was registered in Grain and Straw of both the crops which could be beneficial for human and live stock health.

OFR 2 : Diversification of existing farming systems under marginal house hold conditions

  • Among two existing farming systems prevailed in 24 household, the highest net Income (Rs. 113290.00) was registered under Crop + Dairy + Horticulture farming system with 0.6 ha average land holding followed by Crop + Dairy (Rs. 102413.00) practiced in 0.8 ha (2018-19).
  • In all two prevailed farming systems, low cost intervention in existing crop production and live stock were done.
  • After diversification, interventions and innovations in existing farming systems during second year (2018-19). the annual household income was increased by 57.66% to 63.43.78% over bench Mark.

OFR 3: On farm evaluation of farming system modules for improving the Profitability of small and marginal households.

  • Six small farmers in crop + dairy farming system and six marginal farmers (crop + dairy + horticulture), each two from six villages were selected. The average land holding of the farmers was 1.32 ha and 0.92 ha respectively.
  • After Constraints analysis, interventions in crop production, livestock and horticulture were made.
  • The average household income of Rs. 163759.00 was recorded in second year with average land holding of 1.3 ha in crop + dairy system which was found 55% higher than benchmark income Rs 105925.00 and average household income of Rs. 153754.00 was recorded in second year with average land holding of 0.9 ha in crop + dairy + horticulture system which was found 63% higher than benchmark income Rs. 94229.00

All India Coordinated Research Project Agrometeorology

Weather characterization:

  • Analysed district wise Agro climatic onset of different districts of Uttar Pradesh. Kashganj observed late onset of 6 days, Badaun 7 days, Etah, Bareilly, Mahoba 8 days, Shajhanpur, and Farrukhabad 10 days, Sitapur and Jalaun 11 days, Hapur and Fatehpur 12 days from start. The rest of the district received 15-29 days late agro climatic onset from the starting date.
  • In Kanpur region, out of the 49 years, no drought was occurred in 41 years (84% ), moderate drought in 7 year (14%) and severe drought in 1 year (2% ) was noticed during 1971 to 2019.
  • In Kanpur region, out of 49 years, 31 years were observed as agriculture drought year during kharif season. Agriculture drought was prolonged up to 12 meteorological weeks from 31 to 42 in 1979, while, rainfall was discontinued during 13 weeks in Kharif season of the year 1974 and 2015.
  • The deviation of annual rainfall was seen in decreasing trend from the normal rainfall during the decade 2001-2010 and 2011-2019 whereas, the initial decade 1971-1980, 1981-1990 and 1991-2000 observed higher decadal rainfall over normal. The annual decadal rainfall trend was observed in descending order from higher to lower. The data also revealed that decadal winter season rainfall showed erratic pattern, whereas, rainfall during Summer season is in increasing pattern from initial decade 1971-1980 to 2011-2019.
  • Decadal South-west and Post monsoon rainfall decreased continuously from initial to last decade. This showed that both South-west and post monsoon rainfall shifted towards summer and winter season rainfall.

 

Crop Weatther Relationship

Rice

  • Timely planted (02 July) crop when temperature and rainfall during planting, PI and milking period was estimated 31.7,34.5 and 34.80C (Tmax.), 25.7, 23.3 and 21.0 0C (Tmin.) and 50.3, 138.8 and 51.2mm ( RF) at respective stages proved to be optimum and produces the highest grain (43.5 q/ha), straw yield (64.2 q/ha) and harvest index (40.3 %).Hence 02 July transplanting of rice was significantly superior as compared to other two dates of planting viz; 12 July and 22 July.
  • Among the varieties NDR-359 gave 18.3 %, 12.3% and 11.5 % higher grain yield as compared to CSR-27, Sarjoo-52, and Swarna, respectively. The grain yield gradually decreased by 10 days delayed over 02 July, was recorded 11.1% and 31.0 % yield.
  • It can say that first week of July is better(normal date of planting) for plantation of paddy and NDR -359 is superior amog the four tested varieties for Central part of U.P.

Maize

  • The highest maize seed yield (62.6 q/ha) was obtained in 19th June early sowing as compared to 29th June (57.6 q/ha) and 09th July (49.4 q/ha) sowing. The optimum maximum and minimum temperature at different phonological stages was received in early sown crop.
  • The higher heat unit i.e. 156.3, 646.0,103.9, and 233.70Cdays was recorded during emergence, knee high, 50% silking and dough stages, respectively, in timely sown crop as compared to subsequent 10 day delayed sowing.

Wheat

  • The analysis of five year weather and crop data revealed that the higher maximum and minimum temperature during vegetative stage of wheat varieties (HD-2967, HD-2733, K-307 and K-9107) showed significant positive correlation (R2 = 0.31 & 0.028, respectively) while negative Correlation was found when temperature (Max.& Min.) was higher during reproductive stage (R2 = 0.53 & 0.81).
  • At vegetative stage, unit increase in maximum temperature enhanced wheat yield by 0.25 t./ha while unit increase in minimum temperature decreased the wheat yield by 0.14 t./ha.
  • Unit increase in maximum and minimum temperature during reproductive stage decreased wheat yield by 0.22 and 0.34 t./ha, respectively.

  • Under the Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa project (GKMS) is issuing crop and location specific weather based agro advisories for the benefit of farming community on every Tuesday and Friday along with occurrence of extreme weather events.   • District level weather forecast for next 5-days in respect of Rainfall, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity and clouds, weekly cumulative rainfall and Crop specific advisories are provided to farmers.
  • We are continuously in providing crop specific advisories to the farmers through different print/visual/Radio/ IT based media including short message service (SMS) and Interactive Voice Response Service (IVRS) facilitating for appropriate field level actions.
  • Weather forecast based agromet advisories are disseminated through MKisan portal launched by Ministry of Agriculture and also under public private partner. More than 576708 farmers of 17th districts of central Uttar Pradesh have been farmer registered in mKisan Portal and they are regularly receiving text and voice SMS through mKisan Portal.
  • The weather based agromet advisories helped in increasing yield and controlling disease and pest infestation of crops.
  • Weather based agromet advisories are disseminated through Meghdoot app launched by Ministry of earth Science, IMD and ICAR and also under public private partner.
  • The registered farmers receiving SMS through the mKisan portal every Tuesday & Friday. Total five SMS is sent per month. The total 576708 farmer getting advantage of valuable weather based information for conducting further agronomical practices by SMS.
  • The meghdoot app helps farmers to manage crops & livestock better because weather based agromet advisory provided on app is a quick way to disseminate the forecast based agriculture.
  • Agromet advisory bulletin of District level and block level are uploading to the site of IMD http://agromet.imd.gov.in/ and http://www.imdagrimet.gov.in/ every Tuesday and Friday.
  • Daily weather data is being updated on this site http://www.imdagrimet.gov.in/ everyday.
  • Agromet advisory bulletin of District level and block level are uploading to the mail i.e. agrimet_pune@yahoo.com, agrimet_information@yahoo.com, lata.vishnoi@gmail.com.
  • Weather data is sent to all Newspaper Journalist through whats app group of agrometeorology “CSA Weather Information”.
  • Farmers also get weather information details by phone & news paper.
  • Farmers feedback is also been collected through telephonic and whatsapp message about the profit/loss occurred due to agromet advisory bulletin.

FASAL Project

  • Timely forecast Kharif season (2019) at F1, F2 and F3 stage crop forecast of Rice crop of 12 District viz Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Lucknow, Etawah, Mainpuri, Mathura, Auriya, Agra, Kannauj and Farrukhabad with validation of + 10 error percentage by using SPSS statistical and DSSAT model has been done and submitted to India Meteorological Department and MNCFC, New Delhi for estimation crop value for better income of the farmers by Indian government.

Departmental Achievements

Agronomy has contributed significantly in developing improved agro-techniques and production technologies as well as furtherance of knowledge. The most important achievements are briefly summarized below :

(A) Low cost/ Non monetary input technologies :

  • In border method of sowing every 4th row is kept unseeded and unfertilized providing saving of 25% costly inputs like seed, fertilizers and labours and harvest normal yield. It also provides convenience in intercultural operations, rouging of off-type plants in seed crops, plant protections and irrigation.
  • Thinning and topping in mustard increases their yields by 40-50%.
  • Topping in April sown early pigeon pea increases yield to the extent of 15-20%.
  • Sowing of wheat crop into South to North direction increases the yield by 1.5 to 2.0 q/ha in comparison to sowing in East to West direction except sugarcane.
  • Use of sprouted seeds of wheat under late sown conditions has been found to enhance the germination and thereby increases yield.
  • Sowing of early pigeon pea in the month of April (first fortnight) under irrigated conditions increases yield by 30-50% than July sowing.

(B) Profitable cropping/ Farming systems :

  • In rice- wheat cropping system under integrated nutrient management, application of 50% N through FYM and remaining 50% N+ full recommended P2O5 and K2O through chemical fertilizers in rice and recommended dose of 100% N + P2O5 + K2O through chemical fertilizers in wheat maximizes the yield and sustains the soil health for longer period.
  • Under crop diversification and cropping intensity experiments, maize potato- onion and maize garlic moong cropping systems are productive and remunerative.
  • Hybrid rice-wheat- moong cropping system is suitable for sustaining soil health and production in place of rice-wheat system.
  • Under precision farming approach (site specific nutrient management – SSNM), application of fertilizer in hybrid rice- wheat cropping system @150:30:120:50:40 kg N,P,K,S, Zn/ha to rice and 150:30:120 kg N,P,K/ha to wheat gives maximum yield and net monitory return.
  • An on station integrated farming system model has been established in this department, initially three components viz., crop production, dairy and horticulture units are running in one hectare of land. During the year 2015-16 total net income of Rs 1,30,342.00 was obtained from IFS model. Out of this Rs 56,642.00 from crop production Rs 72,770.00 from dairy
    (1 cow+ 1 buffalo) and Rs 930.00 from horticulture units were fetched.
  • Under nitrogen scheduling experiment, baby corn fertilized with 150 Kg N/ha in 3 equal splits at basal, knee high at pre-taselling stages yields higher marketable corn with maximum net return in winter season.
  • Sesame- pea cropping system is a profitable cropping system for the farmers of Banda and Kaushambi.
  • Balance nutrition @ 120 kg N, 60 kg P2O5, 40 kg K2O and 25 kg zinc sulphate/ha in rice wheat cropping system provides maximum system production and net monitory return under the agro-ecological conditions of Banda and Kushambi districts.
  • 60 kg P2O5 in April sown early pigeon pea + green gram (1:3) is optimum dose to meet out the Phosphorus requirement of the system.

(C ) Intercropping system :

  • Intercropping of mustard/ dwarf wheat/ potato coriander with autumn planted cane has been tested. These intercropping systems fetched maximum profit without damaging sugarcane crop.
  • Planting of sugarcane by border ridge technique rows 60 cm apart and intercropping of mustard or potato gives 15% higher yield of potato or mustard without any reduction in the stalk yield of cane.
  • Wheat, barley, mustard and late sown wheat exerts adverse effect on cane if grown in intercropping system.
  • Intercropping of green gram / black gram / cowpea in spring planted cane increases 15% yield of intercrop.
  • Intercropping of Rabi crops like cereals (wheat, barley, oats), oilseeds (mustard and linseed), pulses (chickpea, field pea, dwarf pea, lentil and French bean), vegetables (cole crops, tomato, radish, carrot, lettuce), spices (Coriander, Methi, Aniseed, Nigella, Ajwain) tobacco etc. with potato through border ridge technique are productive and profitable.
  • Chickpea + coriander intercropping system reduces the incidence of pod borer and wilt by about 40% in chickpea crop.
  • Intercropping of linseed with chickpea reduces the infection of wilt in chickpea.

(D) Multiple cropping :

Following multiple and relay crop sequence have been recommended to the cultivators.

  • Maize – early potato – Wheat – mungbean
  • Maize – toria – Onion
  • Paddy – Wheat – Fodder – (Bajra and Cowpea)
  • Paddy – Mustard – Fodder – (Bajra and Cowpea)
  • Paddy – Chickpea – Fodder – (Bajra and Cowpea)
  • Paddy – Pea – Fodder – (Bajra and Cowpea)
  • Chari – Bajra – Berseem + Japani Rai – Maize + Cowpea
  • Chari – Berseem + Japani Sarson – Bajra + Cowpea
  • Paddy – Toria – Cheena – Mungbean
  • Maize+Blackgram-Potato-Onion
  • Maize–Garlic-Green gram (G+R)

(D) Water management

  • Pea + mustard, pea, lentil and mustard crops are remunerative when only one irrigation as pre sowing irrigation is available.
  • Chickpea crop is more remunerative when two irrigations including pre- sowing irrigation is available.
  • Application of 2 irrigations at 15 cm CPE is optimum for obtaining economical yield with chickpea + linseed intercropping system.
  • Potato crop gives normal yield when irrigated in alternate trenches. This practice covers 80% additional area with the same amount of water.
  • In Kharif pulses, two irrigations at flower initiation and pod filling stages are optimum, if rain water is not available.
  • Groundnut gives maximum yield with 2 irrigations one at pegging and second at pod filling stage, if the rain water is not available.
  • Cultivation of sorghum (Fodder) and pearl millet are better under late onset of monsoon.
  • In rice-wheat sequence, application of pyrite @ 6q/ha is effective in case of brackish water irrigation.
  • Two irrigations at flowering and pod filling stages are sufficient for the cultivation of Toria (Var. Bhawani) under central plain zone of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Straw mulching in potato saves the irrigation by 50% owning to increase in interval of irrigation from 10 days to 20 days thereby reducing number of irrigations from 8 to 4.

Agronomic research on different crops and cropping systems are being carried out considering various problems raised by farmers and authenticated by the Research Advisory Committee Meeting of Agronomy discipline held twice (Kharif and Rabi) in a year and recommendations are made accordingly. Emphasis is laid on basic and strategic research aspects of crop husbandry, cropping systems, farming systems, organic farming, water management, weed management and Agro-meteorological aspects.

  • Forecasting Agriculture output using space Agro-meteorology and land based observation (FASAL) funded by Ministry of Earth Science, IMD, New Delhi.

Extension Activities

  • Major breakthrough in enhancing productivity of various crops has been facilitated by agronomists through linkage with farmers.
  • Besides the main function of under graduate and postgraduate teaching, the faculty members are actively involved in extension activities like Krishi Melas, Krishak Goshthies, Field days, front line demonstrations (FLDs) on oilseeds, pulses and cereals at farmers’ fields along with Parthenium eradication awareness week.

Teaching Activities

The department offers various courses of Agronomy for Bachelor (51 credits including experiential learning and elective courses as per Vth Deans’ committee), Master (42 credits) and Doctorate (61 credits) degrees. The M.Sc. (15 credits) and Ph.D. (10 credits) students of the department also study minor and supporting courses in Soil Science and Agriculture Chemistry as well as Crop Physiology department besides Experimental Design/ Agricultural Statistics . The department has adopted course curricula recommended by 5th ICAR Deans’ Committee at UG level from 2016-17 academic session, while the course curricula for M.Sc. (Ag.) and Ph.D. degree are as per the recommendations of National Core Group. About 15-17 students in M.Sc. (Ag.) programme and 2-4 students in Ph.D. programme are being admitted through Combined Agriculture and Technology Entrance Tests (CATET) every year besides ICAR quota (NTS / JRF/ SRF) and foreign students nominated by ICAR.
